"You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation" - Plato

Research shows play is a child's natural medium for self-expression and communication.

Play Therapy is a developmentally appropriate, evidence based and therapeutic form of counselling for children aged 2-12 years.  Play Therapy gives children the opportunity to express inner thoughts, feelings, experiences and concerns as they use a more natural form of communication, play.

The Play Therapist provides a safe, nurturing environment and encourages children to express emotions and process life experiences. Play is chosen by the child and serves as an expressive tool to communicate the child's emotions and perception of their inner and outer worlds. Play Therapy encourages the child to explore and make sense of their feelings and the world in which they live, in a meaningful way.

The Play Therapist uses the power of play to form a relationship which is non judgemental, non controlling, non threatening and encourages children to consider their responsiveness, encourages self confidence as the child is able to problem solve and become more aware of and control emotions and behaviours.

Play Therapy is a researched and proven form of counselling. It is a way to help children communicate their thoughts, feelings and needs through play. Play Therapy gives children the opportunity to express inner thoughts, feelings, experiences and concerns as they use a more natural form of communication, play.

Kim’s vast experience has led her to working with families and children in supporting them to connect with each other, understand neurodiversity, heal from trauma, and grow and develop their play skills including enhancing social and emotional development. Kim is interested in learning and understanding how individual children perceive their world and provides a safe, calm and inviting environment for children to explore their thoughts and emotions through play.

Kim is a mother of two boys and brings her own experiences of parenting to her play therapy role.

Humanistic Play Therapy encourages the child to direct and lead their own play, to play out what they desire and what they perceive is important to them at the time.

Filial therapy is a type of play therapy that involves training and guiding parents or caregivers to become therapeutic agents for their children. The word "filial" refers to the parent-child relationship.

The Learn to Play program aims to build on a child's ability to play.  Children are assessed on their play skills during pretend (imaginative) play and the therapist will build on these skills during sessions.
